3 Free Online Resources to Learn The Basics of Polo

Many have been enthralled by the spectacle that is polo, but few have taken the time and effort to partake in the sport. There are many hours of training, of practicing with your team and running drills amongst each other which can be quite daunting to an outside viewer. A lot of questions run through their minds: do I need to buy a horse, is it expensive, how old do I need to be? However polo is more accessible than those who have little understanding of the sport think, if you find the right resources and utilize them effectively you can be taking polo lessons in no time.

Three Resources that Can Help You Learn Polo:

There are a plethora of resources online, ranging from the websites of organizations and clubs associated with polo or even YouTube videos that serve as great mediums for teaching polo, however a lot of physical experience in the sport will truly be required to master in the sport well. Watch the online resource and practice alone and with others to get a better knowledge and muscle memory.

U.S. Polo Association: The first website on the list is the website of the United States Polo Association (https://www.uspolo.org), perhaps the most professional entry into this list, this website features a great page for newcomers to the sport. Featuring links to the various rules of polo, answers to many of the aforementioned questions, and even a system to assist people in finding polo lessons. This feature doesn’t just cover adults, but the website can also assist parents in finding lessons for their children. This website also features a great deal of information into the happenings of the wider world of polo. Visitors can browse the news related to polo on this website, and engage socially with others.

Gav Says: Created purely to fulfill the niche of online polo teaching, the website (https://www.gavsays.com/) attempts to fulfill this purpose. On this website a visitor can learn about pretty much any subject related to polo in unprecedented detail. There are video lessons on the proper grip of a mallet, and video lessons for various exercises for beginners which is part of the reason why this website was selected. If you’re looking for more advanced subjects relating to polo, there are some videos about the various tactics a team can use. This website also bears a formidable section teaching about horse handling, which will definitely benefit an individual outside of the sport. A lot of these videos are related to training the horse vital commands, which is definitely necessary for new horse owners. The best part is that the training comes from an individual who definitely knows what they’re talking about, brining 40 years of experience to the table.

PoloIn: The final resource that I’m going to bring to the table isn’t a website, rather a collection of YouTube videos by PoloIn, which I would regard as being incredibly helpful and information packed The content is all in video format which is good for new learners, so that they can visualize the information which is being explained to them.  (https://www.youtube.com/user/inPOLOin). The content also comes in layers, featuring two different series of lessons. One simply referred to as “Polo Lessons” which features the most basic information for a rider to learn, gradually increasing in complexity as the series goes on. While the second series “Professional Polo” deals with the greater intricacies of polo, and the various situations a more experienced rider could find themselves in.

History of Polo and the Thrill of the Game!

"The Georgians playing Polo in the Kingdom of Imereti"
Teramo Castelli, 1640.
The thunder of horses, a sharp SMACK, and the ball goes flying. In the haze of horses chasing a ball it may seem like a cacophony of action, but to a polo player they know exactly what their niche is. Each player was assigned a position with their own role in winning the game for the team, each with the reliance upon the other.

This was the original use of polo by it’s first players, the nomadic tribes of Iran in the 6th century BC, to train cavalrymen and it had spread east and west throughout the world since. There have been records of games played in the past with players numbering up to a hundred horsemen on either side. With so many moving parts, it will take the full attention of the rider, to perceive and be aware of his surroundings and simultaneously attempt to fulfill their role.

It is not a surprise that polo has such a strong continuity. Figures ranging from Saladin, to Emperor Basil the 1st practiced the sport as it found strong ground amongst the upper classes. In the middle ages it could be said the sport spanned from Japan to Constantinople. It would take a long while until it would begin to spread to the west.

The English were the first amongst their western compatriots, adopting polo during their Victorian years. It was in the British Raj that the first English polo clubs began to formulate, such as the Calcutta polo club. By the 1860s, the sport had definitely spread back to Britain; polo clubs would begin to form in mass after official rules were certified. For the British this was in 1874 by it’s governing body, the Herlingham polo association.

From there polo would spread the globe as the “sport of kings”!

Escanaba Polo Mallet Donations Helps Organizations

Escanaba Polo Mallet Company donates much of its profits to charitable causes (Right now I think all of the profits are being donated) in an effort to make the world a better place. While we are a polo mallet company we are also good actors in our communities. While mallets might be our passion each mallet represents real resources for others. This is where the last quarters revenues and profits were spent.

We are working on raising revenues so that we can donate more in the future.

4 Methods to Advertisement Enhancement (SME)

Developing advertisement pieces is not easy. We are in a media world where people are swarmed with information and they often skip right over relevant advertisements that they may be interested in simply because they have "information overload". Breaking through that barrier isn't only about getting louder and more bold. It should include a concept of unique. If you are a small business you don't have the ability to spend a lot on advertising. Use four principles of Time or Money, Uniqueness, Movement, and Next Action.

I was trying to blend painting with "eye popping" lettering to attract reader attention. I think it might look a little more like an "eye sore" than anything. 😵 I was also thinking about making the piece look like the hooves are coming from the heavens with a Greek God sort of theme. Didn't work out as planned (Maybe I should hoof on a stone pedestal 🤔).

Think a bout a few things before you get started. Here are a few things small businesses can consider when making their own advertisement pieces.

Time or Money: You either have the time to learn to create great advertisements or you have the money to pay someone else to make it. While I have neither I still forge forward. In this case, I might spend the time building better clouds, playing with background and working with the font.

Uniqueness: What I do like about this display is that it has color. I think the painting sort of enhances what people are willing to focus on. Much of our advertisement is with pictures but there are not a lot of artistic displays that really draw attention. I will see if this works.

Sense of Movement: There is a sense of movement and action in the display. It is saying come and play polo and come and feel like a Greek God. Polo people come from a certain background (demographic) and they may appreciate some of the mythological symbolism.

Next Action: By having the name of the company for branding and then the web address I'm letting them know where they can find my mallets.

Small Manufacturing Innovation Steps-Escanaba Polo Mallet Company

One of the challenging aspects of making polo mallets is the ability to find straight shafts. The crooked ones are easy to find and you can obtain them in bundles for around $1 per pole. Out of a bundle of 30 shafts there are 1 or 2 that are usable. The alternative is to buy perfect shafts that by the time you pay for the shaft with shipping it is around $40 which makes them very expensive. Because straight shafts are getting harder to come by Escanaba Polo Mallet Company went on the hunt to experiment with alternative methods of obtaining increasingly rare straight mallet shafts.

Experimentation allows for businesses to adapt and better meet market needs. We know that our customers want straight shafts and while we pick out those that are the straightest they are not perfect. While our customers accept little bends in shafts in the polo industry the experimentation lead to a much straighter shaft that many other supplies don't have.

Here are a few steps to micro-manufacturing experimentation that anyone can do for themselves.

1. Define Your Problem: Lack of availability and excessive cost of straight poles. Find a way of correcting crooked poles.

2. Understand its Value on the Market: Offering straight poles raises the value of the product from an aesthetic and performance purpose.

3. Review Current Information/Methods: Look at your library, online, and experts on ways to straighten poles. The more you know about the different methods the better you can define yours.

4. Experiment with Different Methods: I have tried a few ways such as steaming, weighting, soaking, etc... some worked but they were too slow of a process. I needed something easier without lots of bulky equipment.

5. Test the Finished Product: I found what worked and was able to straighten poles. To ensure structural quality I used and tested the poles. What I found was that there was no noticeable difference.

6. Be Open to Customer Feedback: Just because you liked what you did sometimes customers don't. I sent out my first straightened mallet and asked the buyer to let me know what they did and didn't like about the mallet. I'm opening my lines of communication and keeping in close touch with customers to build relationships.
