10 Polo Playing Tips

It’s always useful to review polo tips when you can. It only takes less than a minute to read through the points, but it gives you something to keep in mind during play. Many of these tips are simple but easy to forget once you’re in the middle of a match. Taking a moment to think about them and stay consciously aware can help you improve your game.

10 Polo Playing Tips

  1. Balance before power. Keep your weight centered over the horse so your swing stays clean and stable.

  2. Keep your eyes up. Look where you want the ball to go before you swing.

  3. Use your legs more than your hands. Control the horse primarily with leg pressure, keeping rein contact soft.

  4. Make a smooth, relaxed swing. Let the mallet move like a pendulum instead of muscling the stroke.

  5. Keep your horse straight. A straight approach gives you better timing and cleaner contact.

  6. Read the play early. Anticipate where the next play will be instead of chasing the ball.

  7. Ride off with your seat, not your hands. Keep your reins steady and use body weight, not pulling.

  8. Shorten the stride near the ball. A slightly shorter step gives more accuracy and stability.

  9. Communicate with your team. Call the line, call your man/woman, and say what your doing if needed.

  10. Stay calm after misses. Reset fast—the play keeps moving.
