Delta County is gradually emerging as an equestrian destination. While the region has traditionally been known for Western riding, rodeos, barrel racing, and trail riding, interest in the sport of polo has also begun to develop.

There has even been discussion about hosting a friendly exhibition match as a community fundraiser, with proceeds benefiting a local animal charity. While the event would not follow traditional tournament standards, participants would still use polo mallets, helmets, and Western saddles, creating a unique blend of Western horsemanship and polo. The emphasis would be on recreation, community involvement, and introducing the sport to a wider audience. Maybe someday a full blown Polo team but for now we are starting the sport in the area.
It has been interesting to compare the equestrian environments of Southern California, where polo and equestrian events has a long-established tradition, with Delta County, where the start-up Escanaba Polo Mallet Company was launched. Although the two regions differ significantly in climate and equestrian culture, both offer opportunities for horse enthusiasts to enjoy the sport in their own way.
Delta County also has a number of former farm properties that could support future equestrian development. Many farms that were once active several decades ago are no longer in production, yet they still offer suitable land for raising horses, boarding facilities, riding arenas, or other equestrian ventures. As interest in horseback riding and related activities continues to grow, these properties may present opportunities for future investment and community development.
Whether polo becomes a regular feature of the local equestrian scene remains to be seen, but its gradual introduction demonstrates how new recreational activities can develop through community interest, volunteer efforts, and a willingness to try something different.
