There is a Certain Amount of Pride That Comes from Handcrafted Polo Mallets

There’s a certain pride that comes with making something by hand. It’s not about perfection—it’s about the balance between perfection and imperfection, science and art.

At Escanaba Polo Mallet Company, we make our mallets by hand, from raw materials to the finished product. We even paint them by hand. That means we get to look at each mallet over and over throughout the process, paying attention to the details and making sure the quality is where we want it to be.

A machine can produce a hundred identical mallets in a short amount of time, and there’s certainly value in that precision and efficiency. But mass production also limits customization. If you want something different, as they say, you have to retool. Getting something special is rare. 

We take a different approach. We make a few shafts and heads ahead of time, then build mallets as orders come in. We recently had an order for four, followed by another for two, so we had to get back into the workshop and make a few more shafts and heads to catch up.

Sometimes a mallet takes about a week to complete, sometimes less when we have basic shafts and heads built. We take our time because we want to feel good about the product when it leaves the shop. To us, each mallet is a little bit of craftsmanship and a little bit of artwork.

And there’s another part of the business that matters to us. We’re not just trying to make money. We try to give some of it back to the community and support other local efforts—including, hopefully, a local polo match that people are talking about putting together.
