What is a Polo Mallet?

Below is a little piece on polo mallets and what they do. Escanaba Polo Mallet Co. offers two types of mallets you may be interested in. Escanaba Polo Mallet Co Mallets

In the sport of Polo, a polo mallet is the main tool players use to hit and control the ball during play. It serves several important functions in the game:

1. Striking the Ball 🏑

The primary purpose of the mallet is to hit the polo ball to:

  • Pass to teammates

  • Advance the ball down the field

  • Score goals

2. Controlling Direction

Players use the mallet to guide and redirect the ball with different types of shots, such as:

  • Forehand shots

  • Backhand shots

  • Neck shots (around the horse’s neck)

  • Tail shots (behind the horse)

3. Managing Speed and Distance

By adjusting their swing, players can control how hard they hit the ball, which determines:

  • How far it travels

  • How fast the play develops

4. Playing from Horseback

Polo mallets have long flexible shafts so riders can reach the ball from horseback while maintaining balance and control of the horse.

Quick Facts

  • Usually made from bamboo shafts with hardwood heads.

  • Length typically ranges 48–54 inches, depending on the horse’s height and player preference.

  • The head is used only on one side, so players must orient it correctly before striking.

In short: The polo mallet is the player’s striking and control instrument—similar to how a stick works in hockey or a club in golf—but designed specifically for hitting a ball while riding a horse.

If you’d like, I can also explain why polo mallets are made from bamboo and why players usually use them right-handed, which is a unique rule in polo. 🐎

10 Polo Playing Tips

It’s always useful to review polo tips when you can. It only takes less than a minute to read through the points, but it gives you something to keep in mind during play. Many of these tips are simple but easy to forget once you’re in the middle of a match. Taking a moment to think about them and stay consciously aware can help you improve your game.

10 Polo Playing Tips

  1. Balance before power. Keep your weight centered over the horse so your swing stays clean and stable.

  2. Keep your eyes up. Look where you want the ball to go before you swing.

  3. Use your legs more than your hands. Control the horse primarily with leg pressure, keeping rein contact soft.

  4. Make a smooth, relaxed swing. Let the mallet move like a pendulum instead of muscling the stroke.

  5. Keep your horse straight. A straight approach gives you better timing and cleaner contact.

  6. Read the play early. Anticipate where the next play will be instead of chasing the ball.

  7. Ride off with your seat, not your hands. Keep your reins steady and use body weight, not pulling.

  8. Shorten the stride near the ball. A slightly shorter step gives more accuracy and stability.

  9. Communicate with your team. Call the line, call your man/woman, and say what your doing if needed.

  10. Stay calm after misses. Reset fast—the play keeps moving.

Polo Swings: How To Get Angle On Your Backhands

Polo takes a lot of practice, and the more time you put in, the better you get. These videos help players understand the game, offering tips and techniques straight from professionals. No matter where you are in the polo world—whether you're an amateur or on the professional circuit—learning more always boosts your performance. Practice really does make perfect.

Backhand shots can be tricky. In this video, they suggest shoulder line body swing. Next time one is on the field, they should try it that way and see what happens.

The Tripartite Advantage (and disadvantage): A Polo Mallet Like No Other!

Having a well-crafted polo mallet can make a real difference in your game. At Escanaba Polo Mallet Company, we’ve designed two distinct styles. Our standard mallet is similar to traditional models but lighter, giving players an easy, balanced swing. But wait—there’s more…

We also created something truly unique: the tripartite mallet. It’s built from three smaller fiber canes wrapped together, giving it the weight of a standard mallet with less whippiness (a drawback) but added strength (a big plus). If you’re looking for something different, this custom design might be just what you need.

Try it out and send us your feedback—your insights help us refine and improve our mallets. Staying closely connected with our customers is important to us, and your preferences guide our craftsmanship.

We can build your mallet to the exact length you want and customize the head color to your liking. Click the eBay link below to order.

Ten percent of every sale automatically goes to charity. At Escanaba Polo Mallet Company, we aim to donate around 70%—or more—of our profits to good causes. Last quarter, we contributed about 45–46% of total sales, which likely put us over that goal.

Research on Polo Helmets and Protecting Your Head

Protecting your head in polo is essential. A fall can easily lead to a concussion or other serious injuries. That’s why the sport has rules about the right-of-way and how to approach the ball, and why players generally move in a line—these rules help reduce collisions and dangerous situations. Buying a helmet is one of the most important pieces of preparation, but it’s worth thinking carefully about safety. Some helmets are inexpensive, others are costly, but what truly matters is the level of protection they provide from concussion. The study below explains how helmet quality is measured and why it plays such an important role in keeping players safe.

“Evaluating Polo Helmet Performance Across Different Impact Test Systems” (PMID: 40246778):

  • Purpose: Assessed how different laboratory impact test systems compare when measuring how ten polo helmet models protect the head.

  • Test systems used:
    • Twin-wire guided drop tower
    • Oblique drop tower
    • Impact pendulum
All tests were done at matched impact locations (front, side, rear) and two speeds.

  • Measurements taken: Peak linear acceleration (PLA), peak rotational acceleration (PRA), peak rotational velocity (PRV), and estimated concussion risk for each helmet.

  • Key result #1: There were notable differences in rotational accelerations and concussion risk between helmets depending on the impact test system, especially between the oblique and pendulum systems.

  • Key result #2: The range of acceleration responses varied widely across helmet models, showing substantial performance differences between designs.

  • Key result #3: Despite differences in absolute test values, rankings of helmet performance were relatively similar across systems — helmets that performed better in one system tended to perform better in others.

  • Implication: Differences in headform accelerations resulted in meaningful differences in estimated concussion risk among helmets.

  • Conclusion: Selecting an appropriate test system that reflects real-world impact conditions is important for evaluating protective performance, and a combination of different test conditions may best represent actual impact scenarios experienced in polo.

What Makes a Good Polo Mallet? Escanaba Polo Mallet Co.

Polo is a fast-paced sport, though beginners start slowly—first at a walk, then a trot, then a canter, and eventually at a full gallop. The mallet is your main tool for hitting the ball, and choosing the right one makes a big difference. New players often find some mallets too heavy, while others prefer a custom mallet sized to their height and personalized with their own colors.

Below is an article about what makes a good mallet and the benefits of different designs. If you're interested, the Escanaba Polo Mallet Company can build one to your size and color preferences. We also offer special pricing for clubs and teams ordering multiple mallets.

A good polo mallet should feel balanced, durable, and comfortable to swing. The key qualities are:

  • The right weight and balance so it feels natural in your hand.

  • The proper length for your height and the horse you ride.

  • A strong cane shaft, that offers good flex and absorbs shock.

  • A durable wooden head that’s straight, light, and securely attached.

  • The right amount of flex for your playing style—stiffer for power, more flex for control.

  • A solid, comfortable grip that doesn’t slip.

  • Consistent craftsmanship so each mallet in your set feels the same.

In short, the best mallets are well-balanced, well-made, and matched to the player.
