Polo Research Shows that Performance Consistency Improves with Practice

Looking at research studies can help you develop your team, improve your own performance, and gain a deeper understanding of the game. The study below highlights an important concept: as players and teams become more skilled, their performance becomes more consistent. In other words, higher-level players typically show less variability because they have refined their skills through practice and experience.

Practice Makes Perfect.

Beginning and lower-level players naturally experience greater variability in their performance. One play may be excellent, while the next may not go as planned. That's simply part of the learning process. With continued practice, those moments of inconsistency become less frequent, and strong performances become the norm rather than the exception.

This is one reason the saying "practice makes perfect" has endured. While perfection may be difficult to achieve, deliberate and consistent practice leads to greater consistency, better decision-making, and improved execution. From a research perspective, it's interesting to consider how this principle applies not only to individual players but also to team performance. As teams train together and build experience, they become more coordinated, more predictable in a positive way, and ultimately more successful on the field.

Within and Between-Tournament Variability in Equestrian Polo

  • GPS tracking was used to evaluate the external workload and physical demands placed on polo ponies across varying levels of play in Open and Women's Polo.

  • Playing duration, maximum and average speeds, and total distance traveled generally increase as the level of competition rises.

  • Within-tournament variability among players decreases at higher levels of play, whereas lower-level competitions demonstrate greater variability across workload metrics.

  • Performance parameters and workload profiles showed high between-tournament variability, as within-player differences frequently exceeded between-player differences across events.

  • Analyzing workload variability across tournaments helps inform tactical decisions, coaching strategies, conditional training, and long-term athletic development in polo ponies.

Three F's of Taking Care of Polo and Other Performance Horses

Taking care of polo horses is a major part of the game. Many people focus only on the player, but the reality is that the horse is the foundation of performance. A polo horse cannot run at its maximum speed, remain agile, and respond effectively on the field without proper training, care, and conditioning.

Equine welfare is often built around the “three Fs”: forage, freedom of movement, and friendship. These three elements help create a healthy and balanced horse by supporting proper nutrition, physical activity, and social well-being. When these needs are met, horses are better prepared both physically and mentally for the demands of competition.

For people who have never owned or cared for horses, it is important to understand the amount of time, effort, and knowledge required to prepare a polo horse. The work that happens off the field directly impacts what happens during the game. Reading research on horse welfare helps players and owners better understand what horses need to stay healthy, perform at a high level, and continue to enjoy their role in the sport.

Forage, freedom of movement, and social interactions remain essential fundamentals for the welfare of high-level sport horses

• High-level sport horses require more than athletic training; their welfare depends on meeting fundamental behavioral and biological needs, including access to forage, movement, and social contact.

• The article emphasizes that horses evolved as grazing animals, and restricted feeding patterns or limited opportunities to forage can negatively affect physical health, digestive function, and psychological well-being.

• Freedom of movement is identified as an important welfare factor because horses naturally travel, explore, and exercise over large areas. Excessive confinement may contribute to behavioral problems and reduced quality of life.

• Social interaction with other horses is a critical component of equine welfare because horses are social animals that rely on herd relationships for communication, security, and normal behavior development.

• The authors argue that improving welfare practices for elite sport horses requires balancing performance goals with the horse’s natural needs, creating management systems that support both athletic success and long-term health.
